Building a Bird Feeder For Your Children

!: Building a Bird Feeder For Your Children

Teaching your children how to build a bird feeder is a very simple task. It doesn't take any skill or a lot of knowledge, and it will be great to build the children's knowledge as well as helping you spend some quality time with them.

You should first purchase the materials ahead of time, so that all you have to do when you begin teaching the children how to build a bird feeder.

You will need to buy some bird feed 4 - 12 inch 1 inch by 2 inch boards 1 - 12 inch by 12 inch piece of 3/8 inch plywood An 8 foot 2 inch by 4 inch wall stud A roll of craft wire A 3/8 inch dowel approximately 3 or 4 inches long A heavy plastic or metal lid

Then gather your tools that you will need.

A hammer Some 1 inch nails A drill and a ¼ inch bit A pair of wire cutters A step ladder A jig saw A pair of safety glasses And a set of post hole diggers

Place the post hole diggers and the step ladder near the location that you are planning to set up the bird feeder.

Then place the tools and the materials on a work bench that can easily be observed by the children.

You may want to cut the 2x4 stud with the jig saw first, marking off a 1 ½ foot mark, and labeling the area below the mark to go into the ground. Then make another mark 4 or 5 feet from the mark that you just made, and cut at the top mark. The remaining length of the 2x4 stud will be to hold the bird feeder. After cutting 2 of the 1x2 strips into 12 inch pieces, and 2 strips 11 inches, the remainder of the strip can be cut to whatever the distance would be from the L shape structure that you just cut, using it for a brace.

Take the craft wire and cut it into 4 - 2 foot lengths, and lay them to the side.

Now your are ready to assemble the bird feeder with a squirrel deterrent.

Place the 1 foot x 1 foot piece of plywood flat on the work bench and nail one of the 1x2 precut strips on the plywood. Then place one of the 11 inch pieces beside the first piece that you just nailed down. Do this on all four sides of the bird feeder until you have a 2 inch edge around the plywood.

On each end of the plywood you should now put a nail in each corner of the plywood being careful to leave half of the head of the nail sticking out.

Take one of the 2 foot wires that you just cut and wrap it around one of the protruding nails in one of the corners and then do the same to the remaining three nails.

Take your plastic lid that you are going to use to keep the squirrels from stealing all the bird seed, and drill a hole directly in the center, this will allow you to string the wire through the hole. With the jig saw cut your dowel into five or more even lengths, or you may just only want to use one of the pieces to hold up the lid. Next take one of the pieces of dowel and make a loop in the wire about 1 foot up the wire and twist the dowel around the wire pulling it tightly.

After you have all this done, move all the parts to the site you are going to set the bird feeder up, if you haven't already. Nail the shortest 2x4 piece of wall stud to the top of the longest piece by laying both pieces on the ground, then nail a piece of 1x2 strips to form a brace for the L shape that you just made.

Place the structure in the ground and dill it with dirt. Using your step ladder take the 4 strands of wire and pull them through the hole in the plastic lid all the way down to the dowel. Carefully twist the remaining wire around the short end of the L shape and put some bird seed in the feeder. Now all you have to do is keep watch for any birds that will come to feed.

Building a bird feeder is as exciting to build for you as well as teaching your children how to do a project.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

!: Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

Tips to a great squirrel proof bird feeder.

Keeping squirrels out of the bird feeder is as simple as using one of three techniques - either place the bird feeder where the squirrels can't get to it, use a feeder which is specially made to keep them out, or, use bird seed the squirrels don't like.

Easier said than done.

Squirrels can jump unthinkable distances - either horizontally or vertical. Some say squirrels can jump 6 to 10 feet. This means that if the bird feeder is high enough or far enough away from the house, tree or limbs, the squirrels can't get access to it by jumping. This doesn't leave you many options. Who wants a bird feeder 10 feet high or way out in the middle of your yard.

Your options:

* Squirrel proof your feeder - those big plastic cones you see above or below the bird feeder are baffles which are put there to prevent the squirrel from climbing to the feeder. They need to be big enough, though, to be effective. Some say 18 inches in diameter.

If your bird feeder is hung from a wire, you can add baffles to the wire to keep them from scampering to the bird feeder. One good possibility for this is to string 2 liter plastic soda bottles on the wires. Although not impossible to walk on, these will certainly slow them down quite a bit.

* Buy a specially made squirrel proof bird feeder - There are plenty of these type of bird feeders on the market. Some of them will spin if a heavy weight (like a squirrel stands on it. The swirling should dump the squirrel. Other feeders will automatically close if the squirrels lands on it. Lastly there are many that have very small, light weight perches that birds can easily sit on, but squirrels can'.

* Use bird seed that squirrels don't like. Some say squirrels don't like safflower or thistle seeds and thus leave these bird feeders alone. (Birds obviously love these seeds.)

You can also "treat" your bird seed with hot pepper or cayenne flavoring. Squirrels don't like this "hot" flavored seed but has no effect on birds for some reason. They continue to eat it up.

Squirrels are fun to watch. Birds are fun to watch. However the two together can take the fun out of it.

If you are tired of having squirrels invading your bird feeder, try one of these squirrel proof bird feeder ideas.

Preschool Winter Craft - Pine Cone Bird Feeder

!: Preschool Winter Craft - Pine Cone Bird Feeder

Cold weather often keeps preschoolers inside, looking to you to find them something fun to do. This winter you and your preschool-aged child can feed the winter birds by making pine cone bird feeders. You probably already have everything you need for this craft project laying around your house, and your child will have a great time hanging out with you and trying something new.

Supplies Needed:

Pine cones
Yarn or twine
Creamy peanut butter
Bird seed
Knife
Plate

*Note: If you don't have any pinecones in your yard, try a local park. Some craft stores also carry pinecones.

Place a large spoonful of peanut butter on a plate and give your child a knife to spread the peanut butter all over the pine cone. Repeat for however many pine cone bird feeders your child is going to make. To avoid getting bird seed all over the place, it's a good idea to do the next step outside.

Have your child take the peanut butter-covered pinecones outside. Pour some wild bird seed onto a plate and have your child roll the pinecones in the bird seed. Help your child tie an approximately 24-in. piece of yarn or twine around the top portion of each pine cone. Sprinkle some more bird seed on the pinecones to make sure they are completely covered. Let your child choose where he or she wants to hang the completed pine cone bird feeders and then tie the bird feeders in place. Sit indoors with your child and watch for visiting birds!

This craft project is a big hit with preschoolers. My boys ate as much peanut butter as they put on their pinecones! Make sure to take pictures.

Bird watching is a hobby among many bird lovers the world over. Unfortunately many bird species are in critically endangered category in our world. By setting up even a single bird feeder one can make that little difference to it's existence. This way one can actually enjoy watching them and as well as feeding them.

Bird Feeder Poles are much preferred by bird lovers and are especially useful for those who have limited space available for a normal backyard. Markets have come up with several elegant models. So many well crafted models in fact add up a special decorative value to the back yard. This serves the dual purpose of feeding the birds as well as decking up your backyard. Some varieties have adjustable functions, where by one can elevate them to the desired heights. Squirrel blocks have been added to most of the models. Squirrels are such a nuisance. They tend to feast on the feeds meant for birds. This will-definitely eliminate the menace of squirrels to some extent.

Additional features like hooks, cables and brackets provide interesting and fascinating use. They are useful in hanging these type of feeders on poles. Several such elegant feeders can be hung on a single pole. So it is very handy even if you have only small backyard. Imagine several beautiful pole feeders hanging on a single pole in your backyard.
